Neve's analysis of 'Run'

                                                              Run

                                                               media language
                                                               representation
                                                               audience

Run was produced and directed by Thea Gajic and published in june/july 2016.  'a humourous yet delicate take on male indecision, soft tones and articulate glances quietly assert the indomitable strength of feminine vulnerability'

The title sequence of run is bold orange the text in italic connotes speed, suggesting to me that the short film is about someone running away from something or someone? before we hear any dialogue the enigmatic title makes the audience wonder who is running from who and why. Run appears to be set in an urban area similar to london, the colours used  in the set and the characters costumes are dark and run down looking suggesting run could be set in a poorer area of london. All three female characters wear a similar costume such as jeans, jumpers, coats and nike trainers, this costume is common among teenagers/young adults specially in the city where it is easier to get hold of the brands such as nike. The costumes chosen fit the setting of London.

main charater
Throughout the the film, we can hear a non diegetic personal dialogue of the main characters thoughts. Spoken in a poetic tone the character thinks about being left by someone she loved
This suggests that she has been in a relationship that failed or is failing. As she speaks to the other characters there is a couple extreme close ups/close ups that show her body language and facial expression, she is staring at something beyond the camera, this creates enigma. The audience question what the character is so focused on. Her facial expression is serious, she looks like she has something on her mind and is contemplating something in her head. As she speaks to her friends she seems irritable when they ask questions, this suggests that she has had a better education than the other two as she seems to be irritated when they ask questions that they should know the answer to.
the first scene is mostly shot in a mid/close up shot of the three girls talking, however there are also extreme close ups on the character shown above, I can connote that this is to show the audience her facial expression and emotions, maybe about what she is staring at.
Staring beyond the camera

We are introduced to two more male characters kicking a football around, There is a cutaway from the main character staring, to the boys playing football which suggests that the characters thoughts/mental dialogue shown through a piece of voiceover inserted in post production, were about one of the boys.
There is a mid shot of the two boys kicking the ball around. We can see their costumes are dark and casual/sporty suggesting that it is cold and set in the winter, dark clothes symbolise sadness/bitterness, for the characters this could connote that even though they are currently happy that their lives overall could not be, as the male characters seems to be struggling with a girl.
The setting is also set in dark light on a cloudy day which evokes glum feelings. It suggests to me that the characters lifes are slow paced and boring.

Long shot and cut in of the male characters playing football

The female characters have no makeup on that connotes that they don't care about their appearance perhaps they cant afford high end makeup. There are representations of a London lifestyle, particularly in the poorer areas of London, this is shown through their choice of costume, being very mainstream 'chavy' clothes. Such as puffa jackets and Nike trainers. As I stated above the characters appreances are casual, Thea gajic (the blonde one)s appearance is unkempt, her hair is greasy and the roots of her hair dye have grown out making her look messy, tired and untidy. This also portrays a large number of the working class that can't afford or have the time looking after their appreance to a high level.

Thea Gajics 'run' Is targeted at 17/20 year olds, I can conclude this because younger or older audiences wouldn't be appropriate for this film, as the plot involves activities that 17/20 would engage in their everyday life. The characters mise en scene also is relatable for other teenagers. The characters accents and dialect also target a younger audience that are more familar with slang and londons dialectal lexis. The younger audience may be able to relate 'run' more than an older audience that may find their London dialect/accent hard to decipher.

The audience for 'run' may be more interested in the film than middle age people, Because of where the film is set (urban area) this may appeal to younger audience because they enjoy city life more than older people who like the peace and quiet in a nice rural area. The film would also interest a younger audience because of the activities they are doing (playing football in a local park) this activity is stereotypically played by children/teens/young adults more than older people. football is a sport that is played all throughout primary and secondary school therefore this may appeal to younger people who play sports regularly. The costumes worn by the characters would also suggest that the target audience is 17/20 this is because this age of people tend to wear and buy the clothes that the characters have on e.g the Nike trainers.
